The LOL Project
The Limits of Language in Ancient Philosophy
Proyecto PID2022-139027NA-I00 financiado por MCIN/ AEI / 10.13039/501100011033 / FEDER, UE

This project will trace the connections between the Principle of Non-Contradiction (PNC), the Law of the Excluded Middle (LEM), the Law of Identity (ID), and ancient Greek ideas that something cannot be spoken of or thought about. This will allow us not only to trace the development of the PNC, LEM and ID in ancient Greek thought, but also to undermine the contrast between 'coldly rational' Greek philosophy and Eastern 'mysticism'. The main school which will be investigated will be Neoplatonism: for those thinkers, a discursive language exists only if it is about being, which is equivalent for them to the Nous, the level of Platonic Forms. Beyond being lies the Ineffable, a hyper-ontological level which goes beyond logic and its first principles. We aim two investigate which strategies Plotinus, Proclus and Damascius developed to hold a discourse on the Ineffable.
